Text Box: 2005  The legend of Tarmac.
Wings and Wheels was a blast.   Captain Zukauskas led 6th Cavalry in a rescue mission for some ambushed Rangers.  The battle scenario was that two jeeps full of Rangers are ambushed.  6th cavalry on a rescue mission picks up the rangers and call in an air strike.  A P-51 strafes the Germans and two Stuart Tanks pour on the juice by hammering the Germans with their shells.  What a beautiful sight that P-51 was.   Then the Rangers go in the French village and mop up the Germans with a quick and brutal force.  Things went great on Sunday, but Saturday was a different story.  Ron Eckstein was riding as rifleman in the second jeep with driver and Commander Sergeant Wallace and machine gunner Corporal Voyles.   We were supposed to make a quick stop, lay suppression fire until the Rangers are loaded.  NOBODY is supposed to get out of the jeeps.  Private Ron Eckstein exited the jeep to lay down better fire and to get a little better cover.  Sergeant Wallace got the order to move on, he laid down the gas on the “Little Pony” and she took off with out the private.   Private Eckstein was running beside the jeep and trying to get in.  He fell to the ground and he grabbed the back of the jeep.  As he was being drug at least 25 yards, he was yelling for help.  Luckily the Sergeant heard him.   Sergeant stops the jeep and Private Eckstein runs to get his helmet.  He fails down as Corporal Voyles was getting out of the jeep to check on the Private.  As Private Eckstein fell to the ground, Corporal Voyles picked the Private up by the seat of the pants and threw him in the back of the jeep.  All parties adrenaline was pumping at full speed as we speed around the airport to get in position for the mop-up of the Germans.   We were real happy to see that Private Eckstein has no injuries, except for his pride.  He now has a new nickname as Private “Tarmac” Eckstein.
